Montenegro's state-owned electricity company EPCG has announced development of a virtual power plant (VPP) system. A VPP aggregates distributed energy resources—rooftop solar, battery storage, heat pumps, controllable loads, and EV chargers across multiple locations—into a single coordinated unit that can be managed remotely. This allows EPCG to balance supply and demand without building new central power stations.
Why this matters: VPPs represent the practical foundation for grid stability as distributed generation grows. For installers and operators, it means devices will increasingly need remote communication capability and automated response protocols. Grid operators gain flexibility to manage peak demand by coordinating thousands of smaller assets in real-time.
