Electric vehicles equipped with bidirectional charging can send stored energy back to the grid during peak demand periods, yet widespread deployment remains limited. Fast Company's reporting highlights the gap between this technical capability and actual implementation across energy networks. The technology exists and pilot programs demonstrate functionality, but adoption by grid operators and vehicle owners has not accelerated as early proponents anticipated.

Several interconnected barriers explain the slow uptake. Regulatory frameworks remain inconsistent across jurisdictions, creating uncertainty for operators. Equipment costs for bidirectional chargers and compatible vehicles remain higher than unidirectional alternatives. Grid operators must also develop protocols and compensation structures to make V2G economically viable for vehicle owners. These technical, financial and administrative hurdles mean that despite theoretical benefits, the infrastructure integration required for scaled deployment has not materialized quickly.

The practical implication is that energy systems planning must currently treat EV fleets primarily as loads to manage, not as distributed storage resources. For installers, operators, and grid coordinators, this means V2G capabilities may exist in some new vehicles but should not yet be factored into grid stability strategies or storage planning. As standards develop and costs decline, this could change—but decisions today should be based on proven, deployed technology rather than future potential.
