Volkswagen Group and its charging subsidiary Elli have introduced a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) offering aimed at mass-market customers, moving the technology beyond pilot projects. V2G allows electric vehicles to discharge stored energy back to the grid or a building during peak demand periods or grid stress. The announcement positions both companies to address growing interest from residential and commercial operators seeking to integrate EV batteries as distributed energy resources.

This matters because V2G creates a bidirectional relationship between transport and energy infrastructure. For installers and grid operators, it adds a new flexible load that can absorb or release power on command—potentially useful during frequency regulation, peak shaving, or renewable integration.
