Hyundai and Kia have introduced AllDayEnergy, a service that enables EV owners to sell electricity stored in their vehicle batteries back to the electricity grid. The program allows participating owners to monetize their vehicle's battery capacity during periods when they're not driving, effectively turning their EV into a distributed energy resource. The service integrates with home energy management systems and requires compatible charging infrastructure.
The development extends the practical role of EVs beyond transport into grid-balancing infrastructure. For energy operators and installers, this represents a shift toward distributed resource aggregation—where numerous small battery systems (vehicle fleets) can collectively respond to grid demand signals. This capability becomes more valuable as solar and wind penetration increases, since vehicle batteries can store renewable energy during peak generation and discharge when needed.
