Azaneo bets on irreversible electroporation to beat herbicide on cost

Azaneo, an Australian startup, has introduced a tractor-mounted implement that uses irreversible electroporation to destroy weeds with short electric pulses. The system is positioned as an alternative to chemical herbicides, which face rising resistance and application limits from wind and weather. It operates without generating significant heat and can run at any time of day.

The equipment adds to the set of mobile electric loads that already include robotic maintenance platforms, autonomous monitoring units, and grid-connected agricultural machinery. Coordination between these systems and local generation or storage assets requires scheduling of pulsed, high-power draws alongside continuous loads from solar inverters, heat pumps, or EV chargers.

The device differs from thermal electric weeders by relying on cell-membrane disruption rather than heat, which changes the power profile delivered to the implement during field passes.
