Who does what? Write it down.
Before you start a job together, talk clearly. Who handles the roof? Who does the plumbing? Write it in a simple email or message. This protects both of you later. No surprises, no arguments about who was supposed to do what.
Invoice each other properly.
Each ZZP'er invoices the customer (or the main contractor) for their own work. Keep your invoices clear: what you did, how many hours or items, the price. Keep copies. This is normal business. It also shows the tax office that you're truly independent—you're billing for your own work, not working secretly for someone else.
The disguised employment trap.
Tax authorities watch for ZZP'ers who are really just hidden employees. You're safe if: you work for different customers, you choose your own hours and methods, you use your own tools, you're truly independent. If one person controls everything you do, tells you when to arrive, what to wear, or you only work for them—that looks like a job, not independent work. Avoid it.
Stay friendly and professional.
Keep messages about the job. Use simple contracts or agreements if the job is big. Treat each other like professionals, not friends doing favors. This makes everything clearer and easier.
